Non-Profit Alliance Debate - 7/18/2007
Closing Remarks
We will do well to remember that that which we value most highly, has no price. Profits gained
privately can lose sight of the greater public interest.
And this is the role government must playÑto address the needs left unmet by private industry, to
guide our efforts and resources toward the common good. Non-profit groups have now begun, in turn,
to address governmental failures: the lack of affordable housing, job training, employment, and
environmental protection.
Many people, particularly of my generation are finding organizations like these to be the driving
force for change, for social and economic justice, vehicles through which they may feel a greater
sense of purpose, a belonging to something greater than themselves. For their results seem more
tangible; they see more clearly the difference they make in the lives of people. And so they bring
a more human face to the problems that face us all; they bring energy, ideas and hope. And if we
are only able to bring these back to government, and I think I can, then I think its proper return
is something from which we may all profit.
Thank you.
